DOMINICAN WOMEN ARE TWO UP IN ECVA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Dominica National Women’s have won both of their matches played thus far in the Eastern Caribbean Association (ECVA) Women’s Championships currently under way in St. Lucia. In their first game played on Thursday night, the Dominican ladies defeated Grenada in straight sets: 25-16; 25:21; 25-14; while on Friday morning they overcame a strong challenge from a stubborn Anguilla team, to win in a two-hour long five setter: 25-22; 23-25; 25-22; 27-29; 15-10. On Friday night, Dominica is scheduled to come up against arch-rivals St. Lucia in its zone.
The champion team in the tournament will advance directly to the Continental Championships in 2011; while the second place team will advance to the Caribbean Championships to be held in Suriname in August. The airfare for the qualifying teams will be provided by the continental Confederation NORCECA.
The Dominican team is being coached by Albert Loblack and captained by veteran player Anna Maria Xavier. Other players on the team include Samantha Smith, Marcia Gustave, Catherine Francis, Shari Pascal, Lenel Williams, Elizabeth Joseph, Joycelyn Loblack and new-comer Onica Joseph.
