PRESS RELEASE - July 1st, 2008

 

Young Players’ Course Set for July 7th to 12th

The Dominica Amateur Volleyball Association in collaboration with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Sports Division of the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Sports and Youth Affairs, will hold a week-long course for young volleyball players of both sexes, under the FIVB’s Volleyball Cooperation Programme (VCP). 

Participants in the course will include players who will represent Dominica at the 2008 Windward Islands Inter-Secondary Schools Tournament, which will be held in St. Vincent. Other young players ages 18 to 21 who are not enrolled in school have also been invited to participate in the course.

The DAVA expects the young players who have been selected for the course to constitute the core of proposed national Youth and Junior teams that will represent Dominica in Regional, Continental and hopefully, International competitions.

The course, to be held at the Saint Mary’s Academy from July 7th to 12th will be conducted by FIVB Instructor Gustavo Meczyk of Israel. Mr. Meczyk conducted a Level I Coaches course in Dominica in August 2007.

 

Dominica to Participate in 2008 Caribbean Volleyball Championships

The Dominica National Men’s Volleyball Team will participate in the 2008 Caribbean Volleyball Championships which will be held in Barbados from July 13th to 21st, 2008.

The eleven-man squad includes David Toussaint (Captain), Ronald Bruno and Jermaine Etienne of Cable & Wireless Wolf Pac of Pointe Michel; Reginald Thomas, Figaro Bruno and Clinton Morvan of Portsmouth Breakers; Ray Robinson of Marigot Cooperative Credit Union Sunrise; Clint Lawrence and Shane Guiste of Signman Real Vets; Kenworth Bedminister of Morningbird Club Olympia and Bristol Lawrence of Calibishie. The team is being coached by Albert Loblack.

Dominica, the current OECS Men’s volleyball champion is hoping to qualify to participate in the 1st Caribbean (Multi-Sports) Games to be held in Trinidad in 2009.
